The parenting struggle is real

Parenting in today’s world is an amazing journey filled with love, passion, enjoyment but also struggle, anxiety and guilt. Am l doing the right thing? Are my kids going to turn out ok? Will they make friends or be bullied at school? Are they going to get hurt? Am l a good enough parent?

As a mum of a 1 and 4 year old l understand what you are going through. I also understand from the perspective of a professional in midwifery and child and family health. We are so quick to judge ourselves for what we are doing wrong but guess what? You are reading this. You care! You love your child or children. You are an amazing parent. Have faith that you are doing well. Tell yourself that. Surround yourself with people who tell you this. Stay away or ignore toxic people who make you feel like crap. I know this is easier said than done but you can do it!

In today’s world being a parent is hard work. You experience a variety of emotions from pure joy to anguish. You read or hear that you should do this, you shouldn’t do that, doing this will harm your kids blah blah blah…  the list goes on. You know what. My number one advice is always follow your instincts. In my experience they are almost always right. If it feels right do it. If it doesn’t feel right then don’t do it. Seek out expert advice but make sure it aligns with your goals and values. Read websites that you know are reputable. Don’t believe everything that you google. Also what works for one family may not work for yours.

My journey of passion in nursing started in 1991. I became a registered nurse in 1995. I completed a Diploma of midwifery in 1997 & then a Master in Clinical Nursing majoring in Child, Family and Community Health in 2001. I have maintained a huge portfolio of professional development including education around infant  mental health. Pregnancy and parenting has been my whole life and I’m passionate to share my wisdom with anyone who chooses to read my blog.

I would love to hear about a range of topics that my readers would like to hear about in the comments.

On finishing up my first piece, l just want to say YOU ARE DOING AN AMAZING JOB.
